- a RAT is a type of malware that gives an attacker covert remote control over a victim’s computer
- this malware usually is bundled inside some legitimate software in order to trick victims into installing it
- once installed, the RAT operates in the background w/o victim’s knowledge
- things like keystrokes, screenshots, webcam/audio feeds can be recorded. attacker can also read/write files and remotely control the desktop
